The French Connection (Original Motion Picture)

One of the best known and most acclaimed crime thrillers ever made, William Friedkin's 1971 film stars Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider in career-defining roles as NYPD detectives Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle and Buddy "Cloudy" Russo. Stumbling upon leads on a huge heroin shipment headed for New York, the pair maintain constant surveillance of mobsters and a suspicious French businessman, staked out day and night, until they finally get their big break. The result is gripping and gritty, with the legendary car chase through Manhattan's rough streets still standing as a piece of irresponsible brilliance.

The film's success led to  The french connection hello hugely successful public stock listing in 1983 and a pre-tax profit of PS5m, but in recent years profits have dipped and the brand has become a victim of its own zeitgeist. Its arresting FCUK branding tapped into the logo-laden zeitgeist of the Nineties, but when fashion moved from combat pants and girl power pout to parkas and scowls, FCUK was left behind.

It isn't all doom and gloom for the label, though, with sales up in the last three months and CEO Chris Bailey claiming that it has "a robust pipeline of growth" ahead. Its new collection, which launched this week, features a range of bold prints and geometric shapes that are sure to appeal to its core customer base.

The brand has recently been spotted on celebrities including Britain's Got Talent host Amanda Holden, who rocked a navy blue bell-sleeve jumper with yellow mini skirt this week, costing just PS70. Check out the full range online now.
