Divisorias De Vidro is a book written by Juan Parra. It is the story of a young girl who arrives in Vidro to stay with her Auntie Pura and her family. This is during the era of the Spanishipation; Pura's family owns a small fishing vessel whichaloopes with the help of a Portuguese sloop, in order to make a living out of the sea. As the novel progresses the reader learns that this family has a lot of secrets and complications behind them, especially when the girl, Alonzo Aguado grows very close to the young Aguado.
What is interesting about Divisorias De Vidro is the way it combines a bit of romance with a dose of reality. When the daughter of the family falls in love with a young man from the opposite side of the continent, the tensions begin to rise and the whole family finds itself in deep trouble. The young man tries to run away from home but is captured by local pirates and brought back to face his captors. The girl flees from her house but is pursued by armed men. In the end, she manages to escape only to be followed by Aguado and another pirate who have been looking for her.
I have never read a book before which deals so expertly with family conflicts and yet is able to create an atmosphere of mystery and anxiety at the same time. It makes you think along the lines of what a typical fairytale story would do. This book had me glued to the book till the end, and did so for several reasons. Firstly, I really like a book where the main characters are so well written, and where the subplots are well developed and well thought out. So much of Divisorias De Vidro was interesting to me because of the many elements it presented.
For starters, we got to meet a lot of interesting locals in this book including the captain of the ship and the captain of the pirates. We also met several children who had been sent by their parents to stay on the trading ship. These kids were not like those I usually see in children's books. They were smart and funny. The Captain was, of course, the stereotypical old man who had a black hat and a scowl, but he was presented as a very wise and experienced man.
Secondly, the novel was action packed with a good plot. It had all the ingredients that make a story enjoyable to read. The characters were well drawn, and the descriptions of the local areas and cultures were engaging.
Divisorias de vidro em jundiai was released in Dutch in May 2021 by Transgender International. The English translation was done by Claire Gertson. This book has been praised by many critics, and it received great reviews in online book forums and review sites. This has been a very successful story for both the translator and the publisher. The translation has been praised by the children's book section of the Oprah Book Club.
